Race Bridge, Scunthorpe |
Increases in traffic and particularly the size of lorries means that some bridges may not be strong enough to withstand an impact to the columns supporting the bridge. Following such an impact & fire, Structural Concrete Solutions were bought in to cast a continuous pier across the existing columns. |
Project Summary |
> Formwork/Falsework system by specialist to form the pier. > Extensive use of Flowable concrete to ensure no honeycombing or poorly compacted areas. > Steel reinforcement to ensure strength of new pier. > Grit blasting to prepare existing columns. > Silane impregnation to ensure longevity and waterproof integrity of new pier. |
Following an impact from a Heavy Goods Vehicle and subsequent fire, Highways agency inspectors realized the bridge needed strengthening to prevent a potentially catastrophic bridge collapse. Following a tender process, Structural Concrete Solutions were selected as part of a team to carry out the appropriate work. A large formwork system was designed by A-Plant, steel reinforcing bars were drilled into the existing foundations and columns and concrete was poured to form a continuous pier rather than the individual columns that were supporting the bridge previously. |
